Found Poetry (mixed media 2022)
This triptych of found poetry with mixed media collage is a quiet exploration of rewriting painful memories around child abuse. The found poems are taken from 6 random pages of an unloved book, spliced vertically into 3 pages, then reworked into a new original poem using a reductive method. Using a typewriter, scraps of paper/tracing paper, and photographs, each paragraph was then typed, scribbled and scrawled onto the media before being pinned to overly large boards. The smallness and fragility of each collage being held together by just a few pins reflects the quiet bravery of speaking out, even though it can all fall apart in a moment. The viewer is encouraged to come closer and inspect each verse, creating intimacy and trust. Unless time is taken to read the quiet words with curiosity, the meaning is lost.
